The National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project Board of Directors and staff has selected New Castle Elementary School’s Energy Team as National Elementary Rookie of the Year. The team, composed of fourth-graders, is led by co-sponsors Ms. Becca Gilbert and Mrs. Amanda Vinova. The student members are Celia Berry, Lizzie Brown, Bryce Ganschow, Jasmine Lemus, Elliot Raymer, Kiera Randall and Ashley Rankin. The team will attend the NEED National Recognition Ceremonies in Washington, D.C. in June.
This year, The Energy Team at NCES received a $500 grant from LGE's NEED (National Energy Education Development) program. The ambitious group quickly put the money to good use by creating, organizating and running, a first-ever, energy carnival last month at NCES. Attendees of the carnival were educated on different forms of energy, and various aspects of energy conservation at school and also in their homes. The team’s focal purpose was to provide and educate the public on the differences between a CFL light bulb and the “old-school” bulbs still used by many. Through hard work and a willingness to ask for donations, the team raised over 600 CFL light bulbs in two months. Each family left the carnival with a whole stomach and several CFL light bulbs to be used in their homes. The team compiled an entire project and submitted it to NEED. Two weeks ago at the youth awards in Frankfort, the NCES Energy Team was named ‘Kentucky Elementary Rookie Team of the Year’ and earned $8,100 to attend the national youth awards in Washington, D.C. this June! All seven members and their sponsors will make the journey to DC with all expenses paid. The team is very excited to have the opportunity to represent Henry County. It is a very electrifying experience for the kids.
**JUST this week, members of the NEED organization came to New Castle Elementary to surprise and present the team with wonderful news. Not only, was NCES Energy Team selected as Kentucky’s Rookie team of the year, but they were also selected as the NATIONAL Elementary Rookie Team of the Year. What a prodigious honor.
Congratulations to the teachers and students for this outstanding accomplishment!!
