Pursuant to the calendar approved by the Board of Education prior to the closing of school, our start date was August 12, 2020. Based on recommendations we have received, we presented an amended calendar to the Board for approval last evening. The Board approved a new start date of August 26, 2020. Our current plan is to maintain this start date while continuing to review developing Department of Public Health, Department of Education, and Governor Beshear’s recommendations for reopening schools during the COVID-19 pandemic.
We want to resume school in a manner that is as normal for students as possible. Current recommendations, which require more restrictions regarding school operations as we know it, will make this a challenge. However, please keep in mind that we are evaluating the requirements for a late August opening using data and recommendations from this month. It is our hope that as the departments of Public Health and Education monitor the COVID-19 situation over the summer months, recommendations will be revised to allow for safe face-to-face instruction in as healthy an environment as possible.
The next communication to families will include a plan of implementation regarding the safeguards HCPS will enact to create the healthiest environment that can logically be achieved in a school setting.
We will continue to communicate with you about our reopening plans via Facebook, Twitter, and our district website as we progress through the summer. As always, our focus remains on doing what is best for our students.
Take care, Terry L. Price, Ed.S., Superintendent
